How to Determine Ram Type

Computer Devices

Recent edits by: Connor, Maluniu, G34rs0fw4rrr

Consumers interested in upgrading or installing RAM (random access memory) may want to determine the RAM type currently installed in their computers. This can be difficult to accomplish without going inside the computer case and actually removing a memory stick to view the desired information. Although there are some freeware applications available for download from the Internet that can determine the memory type installed on your computer, some users may choose to retrieve the information from the memory stick itself. In this article you will learn several methods for determining which type of RAM is installed on your system.

Remove a Memory Stick to Determine RAM Type

1. Prepare your computer to remove a memory stick.
Power down your computer and turn off the power switch located on the back of your computer case, near the power cord socket.
Remove the case door and locate the memory slots on the motherboard. The slots, which are approximately 4.5 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm) long, typically will be lined up in a row of 4 to 8. Depending on amount of RAM installed on your system and the number of memory slots on your motherboard, some of the slots may be empty.

2. Remove a memory stick to obtain the RAM information.
Choose a memory stick on the outside edge of the row of slots that seems easiest to access. Notice that there are 2 plastic tabs situated on either side of each memory slot.
Place your thumbs squarely onto the tabs on either side of the memory stick you wish to remove, and press down firmly but gently. The memory stick will rise partially from the memory slot. Grasp the memory stick between your thumb and forefinger and pull it out the rest of the way.

3. Write down the information printed on the side of the memory stick and reinsert.
Document the name of the manufacturer and the memory type information.
Reinsert the memory stick by lining it up with the slot, then press down, applying equal pressure on each end with your thumbs. The tabs on either side of the slots will rise up and lock into place. Replace the case door and turn on the power switch.

Perform a Live System Scan to Determine RAM Type

1. Download and install an application to determine the RAM type or run a live system scan.
Some of the major manufacturers now provide free, live scans that can determine the RAM specifications for most systems. Visit the website of your preferred manufacturer and run the available online scan to determine your system's RAM information.

Refer to Your System's User Manual or Contact Tech Support to Determine RAM Type

1. Refer to the documentation included when you purchased your system to determine the RAM type.
Often times this information will be included in the operating manual or on a separate spec sheet.

2. Contact technical support.
If your service contract is not expired, contact technical support to obtain your systems hardware and memory specifications. Consult a support technician to determine the RAM type installed on your computer.

Tip

When removing RAM from your computer, be sure to take note which direction the memory stick is facing so you can easily replace it once you have gathered the required information.

Warning

When working inside your computer case, the use of an electrostatic wrist guard is advised. This will reduce the potential for an electrostatic discharge, which can cause critical damage to system components. Electrostatic wrist guards can be purchased for under $20 from a computer or electronics retailer.

Integrating Your Devices Through a Single Computer Protection and Internet Security System

Computer Devices

By Author

Whether you're using your home computer, or you're out on the road with your laptop or notebook, or you're checking your Facebook status through your tablet, or even if you're on your smartphone one thing is certain - all of these devices can now be integrated to work as one. This means that you can work on your website through your desktop PC in the morning and create blog posts using your smartphone in the afternoon. But while linking your devices on the internet the potential for it or more precisely its database to be breached has also been increased. Do not take this risk like I did and when I tried to fix my computer and nothing helped.

Get Protection

Installing an anti-virus software in your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone is not necessarily a bad idea, but the bad news is that traditional A/V clients are known to incapable of defending computer devices often. This is not good when you put sensitive information in your computer or smartphone while you make important transactions online, because of the looming threat that someone somewhere could steal your information and worst, use it against you. There is a new kind of computer protection and internet security system that uses cloud as the jump board to provide such protection to probably unlimited number of remote users. Even Symantec Corporation - the creator of the famous Norton computer protection line of products - have also developed their own cloud based IT support for subscribers in the business sector. If you require a high-end computer protection system, then you should opt for a cloud based pc maintenance and internet security provider.

One Defender for All Devices

The idea of a cloud based computer protection system has been around since late 2009 and basically every computer and internet security companies have developed their own version of a cloud based computer protection system. It's not so surprising why many companies invested in this kind of computer/internet security as its potential is virtually limitless, which also means a lot of profits that can be made through it. Some small companies like Webroot and One Cloud Security have focused their services solely on a cloud based IT support and PC maintenance, and because they're a small company they can offer cheaper rates compared to big corporations like Kaspersky, ESET, Symantec and others. A cloud based computer protection system would also work well on all devices and you'd paying for all of them for the price of one - that's really cost-effective!

Is there any Downside to this?

According to experts there are still some negative aspects to this kind of computer protection system, after all, no system is perfect. The first negative aspect is how people perceives the development of new systems such as this one as being "better" than its predecessors, when it's not. While its design and functions are far more complex clever hackers can still penetrate it and it's just a matter of time before it breaks into the mainstream media, so don't believe the hype. The second negative aspect of cloud security is that there is a potential risk in terms of how many people have access to your data and their attitude on dealing with it plus there's also the issue of system downtime. What you should know about cloud computing security is that there are people on the other end of your computer that provides IT support and PC maintenance (among other things) to your computer. The company that employs them should vouch for their good character otherwise you shouldn't do business with them at all. Another potential problem that exists with cloud security is the reliability of the company or its host server(s) to remain online 99.99% of the time. It is your responsibility to know for certain that the cloud based security company you'll purchase services from is at the very least a reliable one.

The Bottom Line

Basically no company would want to create a bad reputation for themselves and so with that at least you'll have an assurance that these cloud based security businesses will honor their part of the deal. Also having cloud security as your backup while you surf the web would guarantee that your device will be protected at all times.

The scanning process of such systems is less intrusive compared to standalone A/V clients and internet security software, this simply means that they don't occupy too much of your disc space or system RAM while scanning your PC. Finally, because they provide PC maintenance remotely, you can continue with whatever it is that you're doing as you will hardly ever notice that they're doing maintenance on any of your computer devices.

Herman started out as a technician/owner of a local computer repair shop in New York. And with the experience that he has gained over 10 years in fixing computers, he is now sharing what he has learned through his blogs and other social media portals. He also created a company called One Cloud Security where he offers a cloud based security services for small and medium sized businesses alike.

The new version of Windows, the Vista, requires you to have powerful graphic tools in order to take advantage of its 3D interface.

Right now, the graphic card market is one of the fastest growing areas in hardware because of the popularity of 3D games, animation, and video production. Computes weren't really designed to handle large amounts of graphics so most systems cannot provide high quality results for your computing tasks. This problem has completely been eliminated with the use of graphic cards.

Through the graphics processing unit or GPU on your PC, your computer will be able to work effectively in other task while being able to support demanding graphic requirements. A good news about the graphic card is that the industry is dominated by two players: Nvidia and ATI. Both of them offer affordable solutions that will suit your diverse needs. Another player you should watch out for is Intel because they are the leader in the chip market.

In some cases, you need not even go to the trouble of finding a graphics card since it is already integrated into your motherboard. If you think that the graphic card is suited only for graphic-intensive activities, think again. Even ordinary uses such as image editing and video production will have great demands on your software. Make sure you get the best available tools for this endeavor.

As you can see, the computer graphic card is no longer a luxury you can easily do without.
