5 Easy Steps to Become an Ubuntu Power User For Newbies

Computer Devices

By Luqman Saeed

Ubuntu Unleashed 2011 Edition: Covering 10.10 and 11.04 (6th Edition)More and more people are migrating to Ubuntu Linux on an unprecedented scale. However, most if not all, of these new users are people who have no prior knowledge of Linux whatsoever. The road to being a power Ubuntu Linux user can be summed up in five simple steps that every new user in whatever category will find easy and fun to implement. Using Ubuntu is more than just running an OS, it is about joining an ideological movement of freedom that in my view is symbolized by the Statue of Liberty in the US. Read on to become the next Mark Shuttleworth.

Step 1- Join the Ubuntu Forums.

The first thing you should do as a new user of Ubuntu is to join the Ubuntu Forums. It is a very helpful place where you can get to introduce yourself, make friends with newbies like you and more experienced geeks, ask any question you have about Ubuntu or Open Source in general, join any ongoing conversation and more. I also advice that you take time everyday to visit. Be an active participant. If you like, you can even subscribe to the feeds of the Forums. But whatever the case, please make it a note to join the Ubuntu Forums and you will be amazed at how much you get to learn for free..

Step 2- Get your own personal reference manuals.

It is highly recommended to get your own reference manuals about Ubuntu and Linux in general. Linux is more of a subject to be learned than something to just use. With Ubuntu Linux, you always have something to learn and it is very much worth the effort given the fact that Linux is poised to be the future of computing. You also improve your computing skills when you get to learn as much as you can about Linux. You will also be surprised at the kind of exhilaration that you experience when you successfully troubleshoot your own system the very frist time without the help of anybody. Two of my personal favorite reference manuals on Ubuntu Linux are Ubuntu 9.04 and Kubuntu 9.04, 4-disks DVD Set Includes Linux Training Library, "Introduction to Linux" video-DVD, also includes printed Quick Reference Card of Linux commands, 32-bit Set and Ubuntu Linux Toolbox: 1000+ Commands for Ubuntu and Debian Power Users. They are very powerful reference guides you must have at home or the office.

Step 3- Ask, ask, ask.

Whatever problem you might be facing in using Ubuntu Linux, be sure to know that someone out there has encountered that problem before and all you need to do to get it solved will be to ask. This brings us to the first step of joining the forums. You should also be using Google a lot. Just Google your question and get millions of suggested results in seconds. Do not shut your mouth when you have a problem and run back to Windows simply because you had a problem with Ubuntu Linux. You must ask to get help. To even get more specific suggestions on the forums, you should make it clear that you are a newbie. Most people are willing to help more newbies than others. Don't let your Windows friends tease you with the age old phrase of " that's Linux for you" just because you did not ask. The solution to every single Ubuntu Linux problem is as simple as asking at the right place.

Step 4- Experiment with your system.

The only sure fire way to be a Linux geek is to practice, and what better practice is there than to experiment with your own system. Always have a backup of your system and experiment with other ways of using Ubuntu. Do not just settle for the default setup of your installation. Apply the skills and tips you learn in the above books as much as you can, read about other methods of getting things done and apply them. Read wide and apply more. Be sure to always backup your system though. Try using other utilities like Compiz and a host of others. Experiment with how to make your system unique and you will be surprised at how much you get to learn by doing.

Step 5- Help others out

This is the most important step of all the five. Ubuntu Linux users are a worldwide community of people that believe in "humanity to others" and as such, you should endeavor to help others out as much as you can. If all you know is how to run a LiveCD, share that knowledge with someone. Anytime you visit the Ubuntu Forums, be sure to seek out new users like you and share your little experience with them. Help as much as you can. Go out of your way to be very helpful to new users with every single bit of knowledge you have. Over ten million people are using and benefiting from a very powerful, reliable and secure OS because one man believed in giving back to others. The least you can also do is to share your experience with those in need. You will be amazed at the level of knowledge you gain sharing yours with others.

Practice these simple but powerful points and in no time you will be on your way to being a geek that others will look up to for help and support.

Mobile Computing Essentials

Computer Devices

By Russel CP

Mobile ComputingMobile computing is the ability to do computing tasks in some or all possible locations. Here, I'll be listing (in my opinion are) the top 4 requirements for mobile computing and my suggestions/opinions on those requirements.

There are other requirements for mobile computing, and you can check them at Wikipedia.

Portability

It's common sense: if your computers or mobile devices are too heavy to carry around they are useless for mobile computing. Gone are the days of lugging around heavy laptops the size of attache cases. A good example of a very portable computing device is the Apple MacBook Air: It's small and thin enough to put in an envelope. Also good examples are the humble netbooks. These small, almost pocket sized computers are small and light enough that you can almost put them inside your coat pockets or purses. They offer relatively good processing power for the basic computing needs, up to 15 hours of battery life (depending on use) and are cheaper than most full size notebooks. Since Asus came out with the original Ultra Mobile Personal Computer (UMPC), the EEEPC, almost all computer companies have created their own netbook line.

Now, with the release of the Apple iPad tablet, Tablet Computing have been put in spotlight again. Major computer brands are following with Samsung releasing the Galaxy Tab and HP developing and hopefully finally releasing the Slate, and Asus announcing the EeePads, that more than out features and out powers the iPad.

Battery Life

Even if you have the fastest and lightest computing devices (laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc.) but you don't have enough power to support them, they are practically useless for mobile computing. A couple of hours of power is the current standard for most laptops. If your laptop's battery last for three hours that's already above average.

With netbooks, three hours is just the average. Because of the development of low power consuming processors and LED displays, and also the development of higher capacity, compact lithium ion/ polymer battery packs, we have netbooks that can stay powered for more than 8 hours. Example of such laptops are the next generation Acer Aspire One 533, ASUS Eee PC 1015,MSI U160, HP Mini 210 Series. Imagine this scenario: You fully charge your netbook before you start the day and then use it unplugged for the whole day. Now that's you call "truly mobile computing". With smartphones, especially those that utilizes a lot of 3G connectivity, a full day of operation is adorable: anything less is just normal.

Internet Connectivity

Staying connected to the Internet is one of the basic requirements for mobile computing. Unless you don't have any use for the Internet, your mobile computing device should at least have a built-in wireless network adapter, also known as wi-fi card. Another essential device for staying connected with your netbook or laptops is a mobile broadband device like the 3G USB modems, pcmcia cards, and built-in 3G modems in several netbooks and laptops. The latest smartphones take full advantage of 3G networks: they can work outside wi-fi hotspots. The only downside to that is the rapid loss of battery life.

Durability

Mobile computing has the most demanding requirements for devices especially when it comes to durability. Because mobile computing is done anywhere and everywhere, the devices you use should be able to survive the most number of scenarios. And when we talk about durability in mobile computing, nothing beats the Panasonic ToughBook. This line of laptops from Panasonic were designed to handle the most demanding computing environments. Check out the videos in Youtube.

Tips

Before buying any mobile computing device, make sure you research well about the product. The best way to gauge if the device meets your needs and wants is to try the actual device. If you can try the device for a day, the better.

Always buy mobile computing devices with at least one year warranty. That gives you a small sense of security when your device fails within the first year.

When it comes to durability, most mobile computing devices like laptops, netbooks, smartphones, and tablets have operational guidelines that you should follow. If you use these devices outside their perscribe conditions, you risk voiding the warranty. Examples are using the device under the rain, vibrating platforms, sand-prone and water-prone places like the beach, and other uncommon locations.

Wireless Computer Devices Are Great Provided You Take Care of the Power Source

Computer Devices

By Nazimabee Woozeer

Kindle Wireless Reading Device, Wi-Fi, 6" Display, Graphite - Latest GenerationWhen you are purchasing wireless devices for your computers, you should pay special attention to the source of power. Ordinary devices that are fitted into the computer either derive their power from the computer itself or make use of alternate sources. The former option is not available in case of wireless devices. This means that the alternate source of power is the only way to make these devices run.

People often underestimate the amount of power required to operate these wireless devices. The end result is that they feel disgusted with the amount of expenditure involved in purchase of batteries or the expenditure involved in setting up a separate power supply for these devices and equipments.

Well, you cannot expect to enjoy wireless facilities without any difficulty or complications, can you? In any case, to underestimate your requirements and go in for wireless devices simply because it seems fancy does not make sense. Rather, you should adopt a sensible approach and you should plan your entire approach before you proceed any further.

If you do not want to spend a lot of money purchasing batteries and cells for the wireless equipment, you should go in for rechargeable batteries. This is a much cheaper option that will help you save money for longer durations. One of the biggest advantages of these rechargeable batteries is that they offer the same level of performance without the high costs involved.

You can recharge the same using electrical supply and use the battery in the wireless device all over again. What makes wireless power sources better than wired power sources is that your device will be truly independent and mobile.

Instead of having the device tethered to the computer, if you're going to have it tethered to a wall socket, there's no point in going in for a wireless option, right? On the other hand, if you make use of rechargeable batteries, you can move the device anywhere within the range of the computer without any performance issues.

Of course, the rechargeable battery option will not work permanently. Depending upon the extent of usage, you will have to go in for replacements. However, that will at least help you save money and make things more convenient. There's no need to stock dozens of batteries just because you want to make use of the wireless devices without any difficulty or complications.

Why iPad Might Not Be the Best Student Computing Device

Computer Devices

By Phil Reusch

Apple iPad Tablet (64GB, Wifi)The iPad is the newest device that Apple has made which has quickly become something that is extremely popular. Many are looking at using these devices to replace a second home computer, a laptop, and a netbook. Students are considering using these devices as something to take notes on and use for class. Will these devices be a great device for students for school or not?
Computer Devices
While it is a good device it might not be the best device for students to use. There are certain features that are missing that a student might run into problems with.

Computer Devices
The first issue is that this device can't hook up to a printer. While it does have word processing that you can put on the device, there is no way to physically connect a printer. While you could use the school's printers, an actual laptop will be able to work with a printer.
Computer Devices
Some online classes have Windows only software that is needed to make them work. While this might seem a bit unfair, it's reality. There are many with non-Windows operating system that have issues with certain online classes.
Computer Devices
Once you add the keyboard option, even the most basic iPad model is considerably more expensive than many brand new laptops. When trying to save money for school, this is a real concern.
Computer Devices
Certain sites online don't work properly without having the Flash plugin. While it might not effect some things, there are just way too many sites online that need this plugin to operate properly.
Computer Devices
Certain online applications aren't working with the versions of Java that are on the device. There are many popular ones that Apple is not supporting for one reason or another.
Computer Devices
Many are complaining about sunlight issues with this device. While this might not be a big deal to some, others enjoy using their computing devices outdoors as well as indoors.
Computer Devices
Many are thinking the iPad will be a great device for students. Learn what some of the drawbacks of this type of device might be when using it for school.

List of Input Devices on a Computer

Computer Devices

By Mike Southern

Dane Electric Zpen 1GB Wireless Pen (DA-DP1-01GC5-R)There was a time when the only way to get data into your computer was by typing. That is no longer true. The number of ways to input data -- indeed, the variety of data that can be manipulated by a computer -- seems to be growing by the day. And new input devices are being created to handle these new needs. - Computer Devices

Keyboards

Keyboards are the most familiar and commonly-used input devices, as well as the earliest available for desktop computers. They look like a typewriter keyboard and are used for the manual entry of alpha-numeric data. - Computer Devices

Mice

With the introduction of graphic user interfaces (GUIs), the mouse quickly caught on as an input device. Mice allow you to control an on-screen pointer, called a cursor, which commonly looks like an arrow. When the arrow is properly positioned, you can use it to perform various tasks by pressing buttons on the mouse. - Computer Devices

Graphics Tablets

Tablets allow you to write directly into the computer. Using a pen-like object called a stylus, you write on the tablet surface as if it were a sheet of paper. Some tablets (as well as the stylus) include buttons, allowing you to use them like mice. Newer tablets, and some desktop models, allow the use of fingers instead of a stylus. - Computer Devices

Joysticks

Joysticks are most commonly used when playing games. Originally, they consisted of a single movable stick and a button or two, allowing you to control a game character's movements. Modern joysticks group a number of sticks and buttons together, allowing you to control complex movements with a couple of finger flicks. - Computer Devices

Headsets

Headsets are a combination of an earphone and a microphone. Combined with voice-recognition software, headsets allow you to dictate data and commands directly into other software programs on your computer. Using a headset means you can keep your hands free for other tasks while using your computer. - Computer Devices

Scanners

Scanners work much like photocopiers. You position the document you wish to copy on the scanner's surface, then activate it. A digital image of the document is created that can be saved in the computer's memory, then printed or saved. Note that this is an image, and must be edited in a graphics program. If you wish to convert this image to text for manipulation in a word processor, you need OCR (optical character recognition) software to make the conversion. - Computer Devices

Cameras

Though often not recognized as such, cameras are also a computer input device. They can be anything from a regular handheld camera to a digital video camera to the inexpensive webcam clipped to the top of your monitor. Cameras are a quick and easy way to get a lot of graphic information into a computer. - Computer Devices

Video Capture Hardware

Video capture hardware hooks up to your TV and allows you to copy TV programs directly into your computer, such as a digital video recorder. Once stored, you can edit the video files just like your own home videos. Video capture requires a great deal of storage space and a fast computer. - Computer Devices

And More

There are also input devices available for very specialized purposes. You can get specialized scientific equipment such as microscopes and telescope tracking controllers, for example. One company is even marketing a headset that claims to convert brainwaves into digital signals. - Computer Devices

Computer Basics - Computer and Device Interaction - Computer Devices

Computer Devices

By Josh H. Burton

Kensington Desktop Microsaver Universal Computer Key Lock and Cable Security System (64162a)A basic computer system comes with a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. There are also tons of accessories and peripherals that can be added. Let's take a look at how they all work together.

If you were to make an analogy to the human body, the computer would be like the brain, the monitor - the mouth, the keyboard and mouse - eyes and ears... The computer controls all the functionality in the system. The other devices are there to give the computer inputs and to provide it with outputs (computer devices).

Let's run through an example, let's say the user presses a keyboard key - ESC. The keyboard passes that input on to the computer (the brain). The computer then decides on what to do with this signal - which depends on what the computer is currently doing. Say the computer decided that ESC means that it should exit out of whatever application it is currently in. It exits the application and sends a signal to the monitor (output) to show a new picture, one where that application is closed.

There are tons of other devices (computer devices) that can be plugged in to the computer, some of them are input devices, some output devices, and some are both. An all in one printer/scanner can be both an input and an output device, print(output) and scan(input).

Sometimes the separation of devices (computer devices) isn't all that clear, like in a laptop. The computer, monitor, and keyboard are all in the same box. But the separation of components still exists, even if they don't have space between them. Inside the laptop, the computer is still separate from the keyboard and from the monitor, and it still considers them to be input/output devices that it can communicate with.

External Hard Disk - What is This Computer Device?

Computer Devices

By Josh K.

Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive ST902503FAA2E1-RK (Black)An external hard disk can be attached to a computer, such as a desktop, laptop, netbook, etc., and be used for a variety of purposes. In this article, some of these potential uses are discussed, along with additional details about the device. The external hard disk can be a reasonable option for some people who will get more beneficial use out of it due to its nature, as compared to an internal version which has different benefits and drawbacks. It can be connected to different types of interface ports, depending on what specifications the particular drive was built for.

If an individual needs additional storage for files on his computer, and does not want to open up the tower (or other type of computer) in order to place a new internal hard drive inside, this option might be useful. Adding more storage capacity is a common reason for getting a new hard disk, whether external or internal in nature. Using this separate drive to hold backups of important data is also a common use. Whether it be business files, years of family photos and videos, or other information, having a second copy can protect against the possible loss of these files should they be deleted, the data become corrupted, or the hard drive be physically damaged.

These are not the only uses that can be had from an external hard disk, and as they are becoming larger in size (at least up to 4 TB commonly available), and cheaper per amount of capacity, these drives may be useful to a number of people looking for that extra flexibility.

To read more about the external hard disk, including additional usages, more details on capacity, potential price ranges, and other information, please visit ExternalHardDisk.org.

Driver Updates - Why You Need to Update Your Computer Device Drivers? - Computer Devices

Computer Devices

By Mars Wade

Some people don't have the habit of updating their computer drivers regularly. Actually, like Windows updates, it is necessary for you to update device drivers periodically. Because they are also important parts of a Windows system and have a great effect on PC performance.

What is Device Driver?

Device driver is a special system program which allows Windows system to connect with the device on a computer. Only with it, can Windows system give orders to a device and make the device implement operations. Without a driver, you will not be able to use your printer, camera, scanner or other hardware on your PC. You can see how important it is.

Why Need to Update Drivers?

A lot of hardware manufacturers release updates of drivers for their products frequently for the purpose of fixing some bugs or improving the performance of the hardware. Some drivers, like software, have bugs or errors more or less. And some cannot make the most of devices and even prevent the hardware from achieving high performance.

And driver files are easily corrupted or deleted by some invalid operation by you or virus. When one of them is corrupt or missing, the device will not be able to work properly. In such a situation, you will need to reinstall the driver to make the device work properly.

How to Update Device Drivers?

You can go to the websites of the manufacturers to check if there are any updates and download the latest version. Please note that for a specific hardware model there can be several versions for different Windows systems! You need to make sure the driver you download is for the model of your device and the Windows system that you are using. How to Reset a Canon Ink Chip - Computer Devices

Computer Devices

By Jason Candanedo

P.D. James: Devices and Desires

Canon makes inkjet printers that use ink cartridges. Canon printers have a chip that tracks the ink usage utilized over time. But even when the monitor states that the ink cartridge is empty, in actuality it may not be, as the chip is not accurate at times. In these cases, this ink chip has to be reset to use the remaining ink in the cartridges.

Instructions

Step 1
Turn off the Canon printer then unplug the power cord from the power source. Also, disconnect the USB cord from your computer.

Step 2
Press and hold down the "Power" and "Resume" buttons simultaneously, and plug the power cord into an electrical outlet. This will start initialization on the printer.

Step 3
Release only the "Power" button (do not release the "Resume" button) and press and hold down the "Power" button again to start the test mode.

Step 4
Release both the "Power" and "Resume" buttons. This activates the service mode. Wait until the light display stops flashing.

Step 5
Press the "Resume" button to go through the printer settings until the "Reset Waste Ink Counter" or the "Ink Count" message appears. Press up to four times if necessary. Press the "0" button to reset the Cannon ink chip if the "Ink Count" message appears.

Step 6
Press the "Cartridge" button if necessary on some Canon bubble jet printers to reset the ink chip.

Step 7
Press the "OK" or "Set" button, turn the Canon printer off and unplug the printer from the electrical outlet.

Step 8
Plug in the printer to an electrical source, and then hook up the printer to your computer via the USB cable to reconnect the printer.

How to Choose the Best Driver For Your Computer Device (Computer Devices)

Computer Devices

By Molly Smith

Computer Forensics: Investigating Wireless Networks and Devices (C(Computer) Hfi (Hacking Forensic Investigator)When you get the device name and find out its supporting drivers from some driver download websites, usually there are a great number of different drivers for you to choose. Well, then do you know how to choose the best one for your computer device?

In the first place, you should clear about what kind of operating system is in use, because suppliers often write distinct drivers for different Windows systems. When you get a driver through Internet, you can also see its available OS (such as Windows 2000/XP or Windows 98 /ME) following this driver description. You need to choose the driver with the correct OS. Otherwise your computer probably would work improperly or even shut down.

When you confirm the supporting system of your driver, you still would get many diverse versions to select. Take the commonly used Geforce video card as an example, we will find 53.03 version, 56.72 version and 61.11 version and so on. Usually, the larger the number is, the newer this version will be. Then some users may think that according to this principle, they should choose the version with the largest number for it is the latest one. It is true that the latest driver has the latest technology and it should be the best in principle. However, actually we should note that what kind of driver it is. In many cases, in order to be the first to capture the market or simply test some new technology, some of the latest drivers have not passed the very important WHQL (Microsoft Windows Hardware Quality Lab) certification.

A driver not passing the WHQL certification has no problem for computer gurus, because they take it as a pleasure to try the new technology, but for most PC users who need a stable system, they should pick up the driver that has passed this certification. On this premise, the newer the version is, the better this driver will be. However, there are always exceptions to everything, for instance, some UDA Nvidia video cards are not always fit for certain older video cards, for these drivers, you'd better learn about the driver evaluations in some related driver forums or refer to computer experts.
