Consumers interested in upgrading or installing RAM (random access memory) may want to determine the RAM type currently installed in their computers. This can be difficult to accomplish without going inside the computer case and actually removing a memory stick to view the desired information. Although there are some freeware applications available for download from the Internet that can determine the memory type installed on your computer, some users may choose to retrieve the information from the memory stick itself. In this article you will learn several methods for determining which type of RAM is installed on your system.
Remove a Memory Stick to Determine RAM Type
1. Prepare your computer to remove a memory stick.
Power down your computer and turn off the power switch located on the back of your computer case, near the power cord socket.
Remove the case door and locate the memory slots on the motherboard. The slots, which are approximately 4.5 to 5 inches (10 to 12 cm) long, typically will be lined up in a row of 4 to 8. Depending on amount of RAM installed on your system and the number of memory slots on your motherboard, some of the slots may be empty.
2. Remove a memory stick to obtain the RAM information.
Choose a memory stick on the outside edge of the row of slots that seems easiest to access. Notice that there are 2 plastic tabs situated on either side of each memory slot.
Place your thumbs squarely onto the tabs on either side of the memory stick you wish to remove, and press down firmly but gently. The memory stick will rise partially from the memory slot. Grasp the memory stick between your thumb and forefinger and pull it out the rest of the way.
3. Write down the information printed on the side of the memory stick and reinsert.
Document the name of the manufacturer and the memory type information.
Reinsert the memory stick by lining it up with the slot, then press down, applying equal pressure on each end with your thumbs. The tabs on either side of the slots will rise up and lock into place. Replace the case door and turn on the power switch.
Perform a Live System Scan to Determine RAM Type
1. Download and install an application to determine the RAM type or run a live system scan.
Some of the major manufacturers now provide free, live scans that can determine the RAM specifications for most systems. Visit the website of your preferred manufacturer and run the available online scan to determine your system's RAM information.
Refer to Your System's User Manual or Contact Tech Support to Determine RAM Type
1. Refer to the documentation included when you purchased your system to determine the RAM type.
Often times this information will be included in the operating manual or on a separate spec sheet.
2. Contact technical support.
If your service contract is not expired, contact technical support to obtain your systems hardware and memory specifications. Consult a support technician to determine the RAM type installed on your computer.
Tip
When removing RAM from your computer, be sure to take note which direction the memory stick is facing so you can easily replace it once you have gathered the required information.
Warning
When working inside your computer case, the use of an electrostatic wrist guard is advised. This will reduce the potential for an electrostatic discharge, which can cause critical damage to system components. Electrostatic wrist guards can be purchased for under $20 from a computer or electronics retailer.

Integrating Your Devices Through a Single Computer Protection and Internet Security System
Computer Devices
By Author
Whether you're using your home computer, or you're out on the road with your laptop or notebook, or you're checking your Facebook status through your tablet, or even if you're on your smartphone one thing is certain - all of these devices can now be integrated to work as one. This means that you can work on your website through your desktop PC in the morning and create blog posts using your smartphone in the afternoon. But while linking your devices on the internet the potential for it or more precisely its database to be breached has also been increased. Do not take this risk like I did and when I tried to fix my computer and nothing helped.
Get Protection
Installing an anti-virus software in your PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone is not necessarily a bad idea, but the bad news is that traditional A/V clients are known to incapable of defending computer devices often. This is not good when you put sensitive information in your computer or smartphone while you make important transactions online, because of the looming threat that someone somewhere could steal your information and worst, use it against you. There is a new kind of computer protection and internet security system that uses cloud as the jump board to provide such protection to probably unlimited number of remote users. Even Symantec Corporation - the creator of the famous Norton computer protection line of products - have also developed their own cloud based IT support for subscribers in the business sector. If you require a high-end computer protection system, then you should opt for a cloud based pc maintenance and internet security provider.
One Defender for All Devices
The idea of a cloud based computer protection system has been around since late 2009 and basically every computer and internet security companies have developed their own version of a cloud based computer protection system. It's not so surprising why many companies invested in this kind of computer/internet security as its potential is virtually limitless, which also means a lot of profits that can be made through it. Some small companies like Webroot and One Cloud Security have focused their services solely on a cloud based IT support and PC maintenance, and because they're a small company they can offer cheaper rates compared to big corporations like Kaspersky, ESET, Symantec and others. A cloud based computer protection system would also work well on all devices and you'd paying for all of them for the price of one - that's really cost-effective!
Is there any Downside to this?
According to experts there are still some negative aspects to this kind of computer protection system, after all, no system is perfect. The first negative aspect is how people perceives the development of new systems such as this one as being "better" than its predecessors, when it's not. While its design and functions are far more complex clever hackers can still penetrate it and it's just a matter of time before it breaks into the mainstream media, so don't believe the hype. The second negative aspect of cloud security is that there is a potential risk in terms of how many people have access to your data and their attitude on dealing with it plus there's also the issue of system downtime. What you should know about cloud computing security is that there are people on the other end of your computer that provides IT support and PC maintenance (among other things) to your computer. The company that employs them should vouch for their good character otherwise you shouldn't do business with them at all. Another potential problem that exists with cloud security is the reliability of the company or its host server(s) to remain online 99.99% of the time. It is your responsibility to know for certain that the cloud based security company you'll purchase services from is at the very least a reliable one.
The Bottom Line
Basically no company would want to create a bad reputation for themselves and so with that at least you'll have an assurance that these cloud based security businesses will honor their part of the deal. Also having cloud security as your backup while you surf the web would guarantee that your device will be protected at all times.
The scanning process of such systems is less intrusive compared to standalone A/V clients and internet security software, this simply means that they don't occupy too much of your disc space or system RAM while scanning your PC. Finally, because they provide PC maintenance remotely, you can continue with whatever it is that you're doing as you will hardly ever notice that they're doing maintenance on any of your computer devices.

Choose the Right Computer Graphic Card
Computer Devices
By Marshal Pull
A lot of people say that the CPU is the greatest thing ever made for your PC. After all, it is now known as the brains of your computer for nothing. But many people will say that your CPU is not complete without the graphic card. So what is the graphic card exactly? Basically, the graphic card influences the quality of content and images you will see on your computer.
If you can hardly tell the difference between the 2GHz and the 3GHz processors on your computer, the difference between high-end graphic cards over its low-end alternative is significant. This is especially true for gaming-fans and graphic artists who need to have strong performance for their PC. The new version of Windows, the Vista, requires you to have powerful graphic tools in order to take advantage of its 3D interface.
Right now, the graphic card market is one of the fastest growing areas in hardware because of the popularity of 3D games, animation, and video production. Computes weren't really designed to handle large amounts of graphics so most systems cannot provide high quality results for your computing tasks. This problem has completely been eliminated with the use of graphic cards.
Through the graphics processing unit or GPU on your PC, your computer will be able to work effectively in other task while being able to support demanding graphic requirements. A good news about the graphic card is that the industry is dominated by two players: Nvidia and ATI. Both of them offer affordable solutions that will suit your diverse needs. Another player you should watch out for is Intel because they are the leader in the chip market.
In some cases, you need not even go to the trouble of finding a graphics card since it is already integrated into your motherboard. If you think that the graphic card is suited only for graphic-intensive activities, think again. Even ordinary uses such as image editing and video production will have great demands on your software. Make sure you get the best available tools for this endeavor.
As you can see, the computer graphic card is no longer a luxury you can easily do without. With today's demanding times, you need to have the best peripherals and computer equipments that will enable you to run high-quality software applications effectively. It is not surprising that a lot of people are constantly updating their systems to get the best results possible.

What Do You Know of Canon Printers?
Computer Devices
By Andrew R Johnson
If you do not own a printer, then, consider buying one of the Canon printers. What is great about these printers?
Most people have at least one personal computer these days since it is the world of technology and computer now. So, if you do not own a printer yet, think of getting one of the Canon printers. What is special about them? They give you value for money.
In general, labor in Asia is cheap compared to Western countries. Hence, it is not surprising that other Western giant companies, which produce electronic components, have also set up their main base in Asia. Since these companies and a number of Asian companies are suppliers to Canon, some price negotiation in terms of shipping and component prices are possible for Canon.
Considering the years of research spent for Canon products, you can rely on its quality and technology. Since this company is based in Asia and most of its suppliers are also from here, Canon saves money in terms of operational and labor costs. As you may know, Asia is rich in resources and has cheap labor compared to Western countries.
Therefore, Canon may also end up saving lots of money in terms of cheaper shipping and price negotiation with other Asian companies. Another key feature is that a number of its suppliers are based in Japan as well. Therefore, with such business partnerships, there are good chances of reducing costs.
It also sells all-in-one printers, which happen to be the latest craze. There are two types of all-in-one printers. One can function as a scanner and printer and the other as a scanner, printer and fax machine. For cartridges, they could use inkjet or laser toner ones.
In the case of office use, a laser type might be more cost effective especially in the end. Since they will be lots of printing involved, buying and sharing a laser printer as a network printer might save cost in the end. It is much faster compared to other types of printers.
You can print out clear images and photos of you and your family in color. Since special photo papers can be used in this printer, you can print lovely photos and images in color for framing. Instead of wasting money giving to the photo shop for printing photos, simply do it at your home by your self.

Continuous Ink Supply System (CISS)
Computer Devices
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A continuous ink system (CIS), also known as a continuous ink supply system (CISS), a continuous flow system (CFS), an automatic ink refill system (AIRS), a bulk feed ink system, or an off-axis ink delivery system is a method for delivering a large and practically unlimited volume of liquid ink to a comparatively small inkjet printhead. Many business and professional grade printers incorporate a continuous ink system in their design to increase the speed and volume of printing capacity. Some aftermarket companies also build retrofit accessories to convert certain models of consumer-grade printers into continuous flow systems.
While such systems, especially third-party retrofitted adapters for home printers, have been frowned upon by most printer manufacturers as they have been seen as a threat to their printers' sales, even going so far as to issuing lawsuits against aftermarket firms, or implementing digital rights management measures in their devices to prevent unauthorised circumvention, some, such as in the case of Epson, have come up with printers equipped with continuous-ink systems, like the L100 and L200 printers, both of which come with a continuous system built in rather than as an add-on adapter. This was seen as a welcome move by users, especially small business owners who rely on bulk-printing solutions, like Internet cafes and small-scale print shops.
Comparison to the tank-on-printhead design
Most low-cost consumer printers place small ink tanks directly on the carriage with the printheads. These tanks can have extremely small liquid volumes, as low as 10 mL, and consequently require frequent replacement. It should be also noted, that every cartridge replacement, official or refilled, is usually automatically followed by head-cleaning cycle of the printer to remove air-bubbles from system. This further reduces usable ink amount.
More expensive business-grade printers use progressively larger ink tanks on the printhead, but as the platen width and speed of the printer increases it eventually becomes impractical to have the tanks integrated with the printheads due to the high mass and inertia the liquid volume adds to the printheads and the reduced accuracy of printing that occurs.
Separating the ink storage from the printhead also allows the tank to be refilled or replaced while a print job is in progress. With ink tanks located on the printhead, replacement typically requires repriming and alignment checks that necessarily require aborting any current print job. Separated ink tanks can be refilled or reprimed without disrupting a very large or expensive printing task, such as printing a 2 meter wide by 10 meter long outdoor banner.
Retrofit accessory kits
Many CIS systems have been developed to cover most Epson, HP, Canon, and other printers. These bulk feed systems also allow users to use inexpensive aftermarket inkjet inks as well as specialty inks for T-Shirt transfers or Black and White inks for B&W printing. These options have allowed users to produce specialty prints at a fraction of the cost of purchasing special cartridges or using more expensive printing solutions.
Retrofit continuous ink tanks designs vary, and most incorporate a constant level, barometric pressure design. Constant level CIS delivers a smooth flow of ink to the cartridges as needed. The front tank is vented to atmosphere, and negative gauge air pressure in the back tank delivers ink to the cartridges.
Limitations of retrofitting
Some printer manufacturers explicitly state that use of third-party inks and/or aftermarket continuous ink systems will void their product warranty.
Many consumer grade printers are designed with close-fitting and sometimes fully enclosing shrouds over the print carriage. It may be difficult or impossible to install a retrofit kit because there is no room to install the flexible tubing that must flex and bend as the printhead moves back and forth. Jamming may occur if the tubing droops into the path of the printhead and is crushed underneath the printhead or between the printhead and cover. It may be necessary to modify the printer by removing the cover or cutting slots into the body to provide an open space for the tubing.
Some tank-on-carriage printers such as Epson use a fold-over clamping system over the tank to secure it in place on the print carriage. This clamp blocks the path of tubing from a continuous flow system feeding the tanks, and the print carriage may need to be modified by removing the clamp, cutting holes in the clamp, or installing a retrofit open-top clamp.
Typically any modifications to a product's intended design purpose, such as using the product with an aftermarket CIS, will void all manufacturer warranties against defects and fitness for use. However, there are US Anti-Trust Laws that may prohibit this practice.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Reviews
Computer Devices
By Matthew Abbott
Before you decide which Samsung tablet you want, you should read at least one good Samsung Galaxy review. When it comes to the world of tablets, there are few companies that have gotten a better reputation for delivering great goods than Samsung. However, the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, which has a 10.1 inch screen, doesn't come without a pretty hefty price tag. At around $500 on Amazon, the Samsung Galaxy review you read should explain why it's worth every penny, otherwise you might end up with a product that you don't really want.
One of the best perks to the Samsung Tablet is that it is designed to be speedy. Many tablets that are currently on the market don't have too much in terms of speed and storage, and as a result, lag. With a dual core processor, and 1 GB of RAM, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 comes with around the same amount of power as a netbook, or a low end laptop. Most tablets on the market don't have that amount of power, and therefore cannot run most of the movies, music, and programs that the Samsung Galaxy is capable of running. Along with the speed that allows you to watch streaming videos online, the Samsung Galaxy also comes compatible with Flash player. Apple doesn't even have this capability.
It is often said, whether in a Galaxy review, or in an Apple iPad review, that no tablet PC is good without having WiFi capabilities. Currently, the Galaxy supports 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, and also is Bluetooth compatible. Surfing the net won't ever be a problem with the Galaxy. People who have used a Samsung Galaxy Tablet tend to be surprised at how rapid, how fluid surfing the net can be. Considering how powerful the processor is, it really shouldn't be that much of a surprise.
The Galaxy is an Android-powered tablet, and comes with full access to the Android market. As one of the best tablets on the market, the Galaxy comes fully compatible with Word, Excel, Access, and many other popular media formats. This OS is specifically designed with multitasking in mind, which means that you can surf the web while running music at the same time. The Android Apps market is massive - 200,000 different apps are available for purchase, so you will be able to find something that you enjoy without too much worry. 32 GB of storage also means that there will be more than enough space to store all of your apps without having to add a special SD card for more space.
The design is what usually is mentioned first in most Galaxy reviews, but it's usually a good idea to save the best for last. So far, the Galaxy has received many accolades for its sleek, lightweight design. It has even been compared to the iPad. It comes with a built in high definition camera which can record video, take photos, and be used in video chat. Along with a front facing camera, the Galaxy also comes with a back-facing camera, which is perfect for catching special moments.
Visuals are the best part of the Galaxy's design. The high resolution screen has drawn compliments from even the most picky of tablet owners. At a 1280 by 800 pixel per square inch resolution, this is one tablet that is very difficult to beat in terms of high definition pictures. The high resolution screen makes the 2 and 3 megapixel cameras even more useful. After all, being able to share the minute details of a photograph can only be done with high resolution screens. It is very hard to find a well-known Samsung Galaxy review, or any Samsung Galaxy reviews at all, which don't have something great to say about the screen's resolution.
Many people currently say that the Samsung is one of the best tablets on the market. Its great design, powerful processing, ample storage, and trendy Android operating system definitely suggest that the Samsung Galaxy reviews that say it's the best on the market might be right. Innovative and edgy, the Galaxy is one of the very few tablets on the market that doesn't seem to have any complaints about it. Take the advice from this Galaxy review - the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a must have!
We do the research, you make the choice!sincerely hope that the information provided on this site will help you to make an informed buying decision whether you are looking for. Samsung galaxy tab 10.1, Samsung galaxy. ii or an Samsung galaxy tab 7. With so many different models and styles of tablet available it is very confusing to know what is good and what is junk.

Keeping Your Computer Device Secure
Computer Devices
By Roberto Sedycias

A computer can be a personal storehouse of all your files, data, and important material. So, you want to make sure that you keep it secure and protected against an assortment of problems. Here are some measures you can take to do just that. One way to protect your computer from any kind of identity theft is to simply lock it with a password protective device. You want to make sure you do this so that no one can get into your system and peruse through your files and information. Especially if you take your computer with you to work or school and sometimes leave it unattended, you want to make sure that you have a password that keeps your information private and secured. This way no one can get into your system if they do not know your password and you will be able to keep your privacy protected.
Also, you want to make sure that your Internet settings are kept private, too. For instance, if you use wireless Internet and have some kind of wireless router device in your home, you want to keep that password protected, as well. A password will keep it a secure line and a secured network. That way everything that you do through that Internet connection cannot be viewed by any third party who might be able to connect. Similarly, when you connect to wireless Internet, you want to make sure it is a secure network, usually one that requires a password is secured, otherwise, it is hard to say who all can view your information and your private data. Hackers and thieves loom on these unsecured networks and dangerously have access to your private information, data like credit card information if you ever make online purchases or pay your bills online and a variety of other measures.
Speaking of that, you want to make sure that anytime you entire personal information, such as credit card info or your biographical information with pertinent facts like social security numbers and home addresses and telephone numbers, you want to be very cautious. You want to make sure that you do not ever do this on a website that is not secure. You can tell by looking down at the bottom corner and finding that secure lock in the bottom corner. That will assure you that it is a secure connection and that entering information is all right, but if it is not present then do not enter any personal information because you will not know who can see this information and to what purposes they will use it.
Keeping your identity safe, especially when you have a personal computer that contains a lot of your personal info, is a very important precaution to take. In fact, you want to make sure that your computer stays safe in many ways so that you do not have to worry about losing your personal information. That means keeping your system safe from viruses and other Trojans and spy ware by installing top of the line and approved virus protection software and devices. Keep these updates and do routine checks and scans so that your system will be cleansed of the kinks and junk that can often take away your personal information for other peoples' uses.

Mobile Computing Essentials
Computer Devices
By Russel CP

Mobile computing is the ability to do computing tasks in some or all possible locations. Here, I'll be listing (in my opinion are) the top 4 requirements for mobile computing and my suggestions/opinions on those requirements.
There are other requirements for mobile computing, and you can check them at Wikipedia.
Portability
It's common sense: if your computers or mobile devices are too heavy to carry around they are useless for mobile computing. Gone are the days of lugging around heavy laptops the size of attache cases. A good example of a very portable computing device is the Apple MacBook Air: It's small and thin enough to put in an envelope. Also good examples are the humble netbooks. These small, almost pocket sized computers are small and light enough that you can almost put them inside your coat pockets or purses. They offer relatively good processing power for the basic computing needs, up to 15 hours of battery life (depending on use) and are cheaper than most full size notebooks. Since Asus came out with the original Ultra Mobile Personal Computer (UMPC), the EEEPC, almost all computer companies have created their own netbook line.
Now, with the release of the Apple iPad tablet, Tablet Computing have been put in spotlight again. Major computer brands are following with Samsung releasing the Galaxy Tab and HP developing and hopefully finally releasing the Slate, and Asus announcing the EeePads, that more than out features and out powers the iPad.
Battery Life
Even if you have the fastest and lightest computing devices (laptops, mobile phones, tablets, etc.) but you don't have enough power to support them, they are practically useless for mobile computing. A couple of hours of power is the current standard for most laptops. If your laptop's battery last for three hours that's already above average.
With netbooks, three hours is just the average. Because of the development of low power consuming processors and LED displays, and also the development of higher capacity, compact lithium ion/ polymer battery packs, we have netbooks that can stay powered for more than 8 hours. Example of such laptops are the next generation Acer Aspire One 533, ASUS Eee PC 1015,MSI U160, HP Mini 210 Series. Imagine this scenario: You fully charge your netbook before you start the day and then use it unplugged for the whole day. Now that's you call "truly mobile computing". With smartphones, especially those that utilizes a lot of 3G connectivity, a full day of operation is adorable: anything less is just normal.
Internet Connectivity
Staying connected to the Internet is one of the basic requirements for mobile computing. Unless you don't have any use for the Internet, your mobile computing device should at least have a built-in wireless network adapter, also known as wi-fi card. Another essential device for staying connected with your netbook or laptops is a mobile broadband device like the 3G USB modems, pcmcia cards, and built-in 3G modems in several netbooks and laptops. The latest smartphones take full advantage of 3G networks: they can work outside wi-fi hotspots. The only downside to that is the rapid loss of battery life.
Durability
Mobile computing has the most demanding requirements for devices especially when it comes to durability. Because mobile computing is done anywhere and everywhere, the devices you use should be able to survive the most number of scenarios. And when we talk about durability in mobile computing, nothing beats the Panasonic ToughBook. This line of laptops from Panasonic were designed to handle the most demanding computing environments. Check out the videos in Youtube.
Tips
Before buying any mobile computing device, make sure you research well about the product. The best way to gauge if the device meets your needs and wants is to try the actual device. If you can try the device for a day, the better.
Always buy mobile computing devices with at least one year warranty. That gives you a small sense of security when your device fails within the first year.
When it comes to durability, most mobile computing devices like laptops, netbooks, smartphones, and tablets have operational guidelines that you should follow. If you use these devices outside their perscribe conditions, you risk voiding the warranty. Examples are using the device under the rain, vibrating platforms, sand-prone and water-prone places like the beach, and other uncommon locations.

Wireless Computer Devices Are Great Provided You Take Care of the Power Source
Computer Devices
By Nazimabee Woozeer

When you are purchasing wireless devices for your computers, you should pay special attention to the source of power. Ordinary devices that are fitted into the computer either derive their power from the computer itself or make use of alternate sources. The former option is not available in case of wireless devices. This means that the alternate source of power is the only way to make these devices run.
People often underestimate the amount of power required to operate these wireless devices. The end result is that they feel disgusted with the amount of expenditure involved in purchase of batteries or the expenditure involved in setting up a separate power supply for these devices and equipments.
Well, you cannot expect to enjoy wireless facilities without any difficulty or complications, can you? In any case, to underestimate your requirements and go in for wireless devices simply because it seems fancy does not make sense. Rather, you should adopt a sensible approach and you should plan your entire approach before you proceed any further.
If you do not want to spend a lot of money purchasing batteries and cells for the wireless equipment, you should go in for rechargeable batteries. This is a much cheaper option that will help you save money for longer durations. One of the biggest advantages of these rechargeable batteries is that they offer the same level of performance without the high costs involved.

You need not throw the battery away once it has been consumed. You can recharge the same using electrical supply and use the battery in the wireless device all over again. What makes wireless power sources better than wired power sources is that your device will be truly independent and mobile.
Instead of having the device tethered to the computer, if you're going to have it tethered to a wall socket, there's no point in going in for a wireless option, right? On the other hand, if you make use of rechargeable batteries, you can move the device anywhere within the range of the computer without any performance issues.
Of course, the rechargeable battery option will not work permanently. Depending upon the extent of usage, you will have to go in for replacements. However, that will at least help you save money and make things more convenient. There's no need to stock dozens of batteries just because you want to make use of the wireless devices without any difficulty or complications.

Why iPad Might Not Be the Best Student Computing Device
Computer Devices
By Phil Reusch

The iPad is the newest device that Apple has made which has quickly become something that is extremely popular. Many are looking at using these devices to replace a second home computer, a laptop, and a netbook. Students are considering using these devices as something to take notes on and use for class. Will these devices be a great device for students for school or not?

While it is a good device it might not be the best device for students to use. There are certain features that are missing that a student might run into problems with.Computer Devices
The first issue is that this device can't hook up to a printer. While it does have word processing that you can put on the device, there is no way to physically connect a printer. While you could use the school's printers, an actual laptop will be able to work with a printer.Computer Devices
Some online classes have Windows only software that is needed to make them work. While this might seem a bit unfair, it's reality. There are many with non-Windows operating system that have issues with certain online classes.Computer Devices
Once you add the keyboard option, even the most basic iPad model is considerably more expensive than many brand new laptops. When trying to save money for school, this is a real concern.Computer Devices
Certain sites online don't work properly without having the Flash plugin. While it might not effect some things, there are just way too many sites online that need this plugin to operate properly.Computer Devices
Certain online applications aren't working with the versions of Java that are on the device. There are many popular ones that Apple is not supporting for one reason or another.Computer Devices
Many are complaining about sunlight issues with this device. While this might not be a big deal to some, others enjoy using their computing devices outdoors as well as indoors.Computer Devices
Many are thinking the iPad will be a great device for students. Learn what some of the drawbacks of this type of device might be when using it for school.Computer Devices

List of Input Devices on a Computer
Computer Devices
By Mike Southern

There was a time when the only way to get data into your computer was by typing. That is no longer true. The number of ways to input data -- indeed, the variety of data that can be manipulated by a computer -- seems to be growing by the day. And new input devices are being created to handle these new needs. - Computer Devices
Keyboards
Keyboards are the most familiar and commonly-used input devices, as well as the earliest available for desktop computers. They look like a typewriter keyboard and are used for the manual entry of alpha-numeric data. - Computer Devices
Mice
With the introduction of graphic user interfaces (GUIs), the mouse quickly caught on as an input device. Mice allow you to control an on-screen pointer, called a cursor, which commonly looks like an arrow. When the arrow is properly positioned, you can use it to perform various tasks by pressing buttons on the mouse. - Computer Devices
Graphics Tablets
Tablets allow you to write directly into the computer. Using a pen-like object called a stylus, you write on the tablet surface as if it were a sheet of paper. Some tablets (as well as the stylus) include buttons, allowing you to use them like mice. Newer tablets, and some desktop models, allow the use of fingers instead of a stylus. - Computer Devices
Joysticks
Joysticks are most commonly used when playing games. Originally, they consisted of a single movable stick and a button or two, allowing you to control a game character's movements. Modern joysticks group a number of sticks and buttons together, allowing you to control complex movements with a couple of finger flicks. - Computer Devices
Headsets
Headsets are a combination of an earphone and a microphone. Combined with voice-recognition software, headsets allow you to dictate data and commands directly into other software programs on your computer. Using a headset means you can keep your hands free for other tasks while using your computer. - Computer Devices
Scanners
Scanners work much like photocopiers. You position the document you wish to copy on the scanner's surface, then activate it. A digital image of the document is created that can be saved in the computer's memory, then printed or saved. Note that this is an image, and must be edited in a graphics program. If you wish to convert this image to text for manipulation in a word processor, you need OCR (optical character recognition) software to make the conversion. - Computer Devices
Cameras
Though often not recognized as such, cameras are also a computer input device. They can be anything from a regular handheld camera to a digital video camera to the inexpensive webcam clipped to the top of your monitor. Cameras are a quick and easy way to get a lot of graphic information into a computer. - Computer Devices
Video Capture Hardware
Video capture hardware hooks up to your TV and allows you to copy TV programs directly into your computer, such as a digital video recorder. Once stored, you can edit the video files just like your own home videos. Video capture requires a great deal of storage space and a fast computer. - Computer Devices
And More
There are also input devices available for very specialized purposes. You can get specialized scientific equipment such as microscopes and telescope tracking controllers, for example. One company is even marketing a headset that claims to convert brainwaves into digital signals. - Computer Devices

Computer Basics - Computer and Device Interaction - Computer Devices
Computer Devices
By Josh H. Burton

A basic computer system comes with a computer, monitor, keyboard, and mouse. There are also tons of accessories and peripherals that can be added. Let's take a look at how they all work together.
If you were to make an analogy to the human body, the computer would be like the brain, the monitor - the mouth, the keyboard and mouse - eyes and ears... The computer controls all the functionality in the system. The other devices are there to give the computer inputs and to provide it with outputs (computer devices).
Let's run through an example, let's say the user presses a keyboard key - ESC. The keyboard passes that input on to the computer (the brain). The computer then decides on what to do with this signal - which depends on what the computer is currently doing. Say the computer decided that ESC means that it should exit out of whatever application it is currently in. It exits the application and sends a signal to the monitor (output) to show a new picture, one where that application is closed.
There are tons of other devices (computer devices) that can be plugged in to the computer, some of them are input devices, some output devices, and some are both. An all in one printer/scanner can be both an input and an output device, print(output) and scan(input).
Sometimes the separation of devices (computer devices) isn't all that clear, like in a laptop. The computer, monitor, and keyboard are all in the same box. But the separation of components still exists, even if they don't have space between them. Inside the laptop, the computer is still separate from the keyboard and from the monitor, and it still considers them to be input/output devices that it can communicate with.

External Hard Disk - What is This Computer Device?
Computer Devices
By Josh K.

An external hard disk can be attached to a computer, such as a desktop, laptop, netbook, etc., and be used for a variety of purposes. In this article, some of these potential uses are discussed, along with additional details about the device. The external hard disk can be a reasonable option for some people who will get more beneficial use out of it due to its nature, as compared to an internal version which has different benefits and drawbacks. It can be connected to different types of interface ports, depending on what specifications the particular drive was built for.
If an individual needs additional storage for files on his computer, and does not want to open up the tower (or other type of computer) in order to place a new internal hard drive inside, this option might be useful. Adding more storage capacity is a common reason for getting a new hard disk, whether external or internal in nature. Using this separate drive to hold backups of important data is also a common use. Whether it be business files, years of family photos and videos, or other information, having a second copy can protect against the possible loss of these files should they be deleted, the data become corrupted, or the hard drive be physically damaged.
These are not the only uses that can be had from an external hard disk, and as they are becoming larger in size (at least up to 4 TB commonly available), and cheaper per amount of capacity, these drives may be useful to a number of people looking for that extra flexibility.
To read more about the external hard disk, including additional usages, more details on capacity, potential price ranges, and other information, please visit ExternalHardDisk.org.
